I was invited along with a number of other
artists to do a
work for a special magazine of the Haaretz Daily
Newspaper, marking the 60th anniversary of the
establishment of Israel.
The Hebrew inscription reads "Beyond Guilt."
The obvious
context is that of the occupation and its
victims, but
"Beyond Guilt" is also part of the title of a
Jean Amery
book: "Beyond Guilt and Atonement" (1976) in
which he
describes his experiences undergoing torture
while
imprisoned by the Nazis, and the breaking of
the human
spirit the experience entailed. Finally, the
title also served for a
trilogy of videos by Ruti Sela and Maayan
Amir, wherein the erotic
imaginary (as well as plain fun) of Israeli
youth seem fully inscribed by
the experience of the military.
